SCOTT PATRICK BATES, JD brings 25 years of successful experience in real estate sales, acquisitions, development, investment, construction management and law to Bates Land Consortium. Scott has facilitated over 300 transactions totaling approximately $750 million and oversaw construction management of several hundred million dollars of projects in multiple states.
Scott obtained a juris doctor from the University of Utah. He served as a Law Clerk to Chief Judge Dee Benson in the United States District Court of Utah. He also served for three years at the United States Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney in Salt Lake City. His early legal experience continued with Extra Space Storage – a NYSE-listed REIT based in Utah – as Associate General Counsel where he focused on the legal aspects of acquisition, financing and development of self-storage properties totaling $250 million.
In 2006, Scott joined the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies and became General Counsel. In 2012, he was named President of Larry H. Miller Real Estate. The Miller Group owns 61 auto dealerships in seven states, the Utah Jazz NBA franchise, plus a myriad of commercial properties and ranches. One of his most rewarding achievements was overseeing construction for the major renovation of the Utah Jazz Arena.
During Scott’s formative years, he spent considerable time on significant ranches and farms throughout the Mountain West. He understands the language, economics, investment safety, appreciation potential and the enjoyable satisfaction of ownership in this singular asset class. His solid performance on large-scale transactions – coupled with an innate passion for beautiful and productive land – will serve our current and future clients well.
